U.S. Customs and Border Protections (CBP) is required to collect the following information from persons entering the U.S.

  1. Full Name
  2. Gender
  3. Date of Birth
  4. Citizenship
  5. Passport Number
  6. Passport country of issuance
  7. Passport expiration date
  8. Country of residence
  9. Your address while in the U.S.

The last item, the address of your destination, is among the requirements that came into effect on Oct. 4, 2005. Below is detailed information relating to that question.

Exceptions:
  • Address information is not required of U.S. citizens and legal U.S. Permanent Residents (who must provide their alien registration number).
  • Passport information is required of Canadian citizens arriving by air only. (All Canadians will be required to show their passport beginning as early as 2008.)

The information below provides some clarification as to what address information the traveler should provide in various circumstances.

Visiting the U.S. and passenger has a known address

Provide the address of your immediate destination (where you will spend the first night in the U.S.)

Example:

Street Address: 1300 Pennsylvania Ave
City: Washington
State: D.C.
ZIP Code: 20229

Hotel:

For those passengers who are destined to a hotel and do not know the street address for the hotel, CBP will accept, Hotel name (if known), City (of first night stay), State. ZIP Code should be provided if known.

Example:

Street Address: Downtown Hotel Hilton - (be as specific as possible)
City: Houston
State: Texas
ZIP Code: 99999

Rental car pickup.

CBP will accept if the first night stay is NOT known, the general itinerary of the traveler. If for example the traveler will be touring, the general itinerary city, state and zip code (if known).

Example:

Street address: Touring the Grand Canyon
City: Grand Canyon
State: AZ
ZIP Code: 99999

Transfer to a flight outside the U.S.

If your onward flight leaves within 8 hours of your arrival, you will be required to provide your final destination and your flight number.

Transit to a cruise ship

CBP will accept, "Transit to Cruise Line and Vessel/Cruise Name" in the place of a street address. Enter the name of the city where the cruise will depart in the City field.

ZIP Code: 99999

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

The USA will require a passport or other specified documentation for entry into the U.S. from Canada and from all other countries. This will affect both Americans and Canadians.

Since January 2007, a passport has been required to enter or leave the U.S. by air. The requirements for land and sea travel will go into effect no later than June 2009.

U.S. Entry and Exit

The U.S. has implemented new entry and exit procedures including the fingerprinting of travelers with U.S. visas.

Transit Without Visa

The U.S. has suspended its policy of allowing travelers to pass through U.S. airports without a visa.

Travelers who qualify under the Visa Waiver Program, and Canadian citizens, remain unaffected.
